Gwen's 2nd Birthday!

My little baby is no longer a baby. She turned 2 last week! She is SUCH a talker and has a broad vocabulary and perfect intonations for whines, mad phrases, pouts and baby/sweet talk.  She is extraordinarily loved by all who know her.  She even has a little following at church with many of the youth in the ward.  Her Nursery Leader mouthed to us just last week, "I'm not supposed to have one, but she's my favorite!" She loves to kick balls, make awesome plane/car/buzz lightyear sounds, run around the house, jump up and down, and sing (hymns at church, songs at bedtime, especially Popcorn popping and I love to see the Temple). She is almost constantly hungry and wants a snack or any type of food at any time of day.  She likes to play Hasha-Pock-a-Rosie (Ring around the Rosie) and wear her brother's shoes.
We celebrated her birthday a few days early, so we could party as a family before we separated for Chris' bike trip and the rest of us camping.  So it was Sunday morning that we sang her the birthday songs, surprised her with presents on the table and a banner in the morning. Chris and I didn't give her many presents this year but the two we did give her were home made with love. We built our first wood project together and made her a little doll highchair.
And I put together some tutus and fairy wings for her.
She ran around the house in them saying, "to the rescue!"
Alec wanted to give her a ball and some princess shoes. She loved both, and put on the shoes right away and ran all over in them while kicking her ball. Quite talented in heels. :)  Charlie wanted to give her a soccer uniform and we walked all around the mall trying to find the right one. Its not quite a "uniform" but its close.
We made her a lady bug cake and had our adopted Grandma, Sister M, over for cake and ice cream.
I'm afraid for most of the day we were busy getting ready for our bike/camping trips and I feel a little bad for not being able to focus only on her birthday. But I know Gwen doesn't even notice or care so I'm trying to do the same.

Gwendolyn is the sunshine in our family and we love her "farther than the edge of space" as Alec put it in the car today.

Temple

We took pictures by the Edmonton Temple last Sunday after Church.  I love these kids!

This week Chris is on a 300K bike trip with the young men in our church from Jasper to Banff. The kids and I are camping in Jasper all week with a friend and her son Alec's age. Then I'll drive down to Banff to pick up Chris on Friday. Wish us all luck!

Backpacking in Coyote Gulch

We had the amazing opportunity to go backpacking with all of Chris' siblings and their spouses and his parents...without kids...for 3 days in the middle of nowhere Southern Utah.   It was awesome! My mom was super kind and flew out to UT to watch our kids at my brother's house.  Chris' parents were also super kind and accumulated all the necessary gear for us. Their pool table was covered in newly packaged backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, pads, food, poles, first aide kits, water filters and bottles, camp stoves and propane gas cans. What a beautiful sight.  We gathered around the table two days before to put together our meals: we had rice and chicken with dehydrated veggies and backpacking lasagna (so good).

We dropped chil'ens off with grandmas Wednesday night and left early Thursday morning to make the 4.5 hour drive to Escalante, then another hour drive on a CRAZY washboard dirt road to the trail head.
It was HOT. Seriously it was 100 degrees when we got out of the car. We hiked the first 3 miles through deep sand along a dry riverbed that seemed to have been deprived of water for centuries. I'll be honest, this was NOT my favorite part. As we met the first trickles of water in Coyote Gulch we easily jumped across them as the trails (there were different ways to go that mostly ended up back together again) wound around, over, behind and in front of the stream.  Eventually we had to get our feet wet and then the walk in the deep sand every other bend in the river was even more uncomfortable. Chris was gallant and tried to keep my feet dry for as long as possible by standing in the water to act as a launching support helping me jump across.

We hiked for 4.5 hours and were pretty darn tired and ready to make camp but after a little break decided to keep going till we got closer to Jacob Hamblin Arch. An hour later we made it! We set up tents under the arch and took off our wet shoes to walk barefoot in the now a bit bigger stream. Our first night was SO hot, I didn't really sleep until 4:00am.
Edward climbed up under the arch...can you see him on the left in a blue shirt?

The next day we left our tents and Chris' pack behind and put our lunches, water filter, and other good-to-haves in my pack and traded off wearing it as we hiked 13+  miles down to the Escalante River and back.  We slogged through the water for most of this day except when the water just flat out disappeared in some big rocks we had to climb over. The water levels were way low compared to the last time Chris' dad, mom and brother did this hike a few years ago. What were once waterfalls, were ... not waterfalls. Also we saw some Anasazi drawings.

There was one part where some huge boulders clogged the trail bottom between some pretty steep rock faces where we had to scramble around on a super slanted and sandy slick canyon walls. It was scary but also exhilarating for me.

The "big" Escalante river was knee deep, rocky-bottomed and cold. It was fun to walk upstream to see Stevens Arch.

Back at camp we sat around sweating our eyes out in the sauna-like air and decided to move camp to a cooler bend in the stream and also try and cut down on our hard hike out even though it meant taking down camp and setting it back up again within an hour or two.  We found a coolish spot 90 min away and slept like babies under the stars by a babbling brook.

Considering the fact that Chris tweaked his back again 5 days before the trip and had to be laying flat for two entire days, it was a small miracle that the trip for Chris and I was fairly pain free (aside from sore, sore muscles) Thank you, Ibuprofen! But others of our group did get pretty bad blisters the first day and had to walk on through the pain. Brave souls! The hike out the next day was uneventful, except for the part where Chris, Thom and his Brittany and I got lost. We climbed out of the canyon and had a look around. I had the brilliant idea to try for a maybe sure-fire shortcut over the bluffs but it got voted down.

The last 3 miles through that desert hot sand was, again, not my favorite part...but the physical workout, fun, positive, and funny company, starry nights, beautiful scenery and peace & quiet was. Well, if I had to choose one, for this posts' purposes, I would say my favorite part was Edward. He was so fun to be around, and Chris had lots of good questions for him. We would send him up ahead on the trails to find out which one was the easiest way across obstacles and he'd be right there for an extra hand/leverage on scary jumps. He'd  grab everyone's bottles and filter like a machine.  I'm so happy he's back.

We all wanted to have Edward to our selves for a few days to spend time with him and hear more about his mission as it comes across in everyday conversations. We also wanted some time with each other, away from kids, and away from the usual distractions.  I'd say these all happened and therefore this trip was a smashing success.  I can't wait for our next backpacking adventure, whenever that is...I'd like to try a location not so hot and not so sandy.

Edwards Home!!

We drove down to UT to welcome Edward, Chris' youngest sibling, home from his mission.  But we left early enough to spend a few days vising with my siblings and their families in Herriman. We started the fun right away by driving straight to the Motorcycle/ Dirt Bike show -- a part of the city's big "Herriman Days" festival. Cowboys and cowgirls abounded and it was fun to see the excitement even though it was cold and windy.

Getting ready for the drive / on the drive:

We all attended Tiffany's and Jared's Stake Conference on Sunday. Alec was excited not to have to go to a new class and having all those little boys between the ages of 3-8 sitting quietly for 2 hours was pretty funny. We had a yummy pasta dinner and then played games (including this complicated but pretty fun card game called Bang) once the kids were in bed.  It was fun to have this adult time and I enjoyed meeting my brother, Jordan's Bolivian girlfriend, Estefi.

The 3 moms took 10 kids (ages 3 weeks - 6) on a hike....FUN
We decided to take a tour of the nearby Copper Mines for family home evening. Crazy to think my tiny sister-in-law, Ashley, drove trucks like those big ones where the tires alone are more than twice as big as an adult when she was in Highschool!  It was really interesting to see models of what the area looked like before and during the various stages of the mining. Its cool to think that these copper mines are one of the few man-made things astronauts can see from outer space!  We ended FHE with a blind taste test of American vrs. Canadian Oreos and Graham Crackers.

Chris talked my brothers and bro-in-law to hitting balls together at the driving range. On another night my sisters and sis-in-law went out to dinner to celebrate, Ashley's birthday. It was a very fun time and the kids loved running around crazy between the houses, shooting nurf guns, and riding scooters inside their unfinished basements.

Edward got home on a Thursday. He'd been serving in the Merida, Mexico Mission. We haven't seen him for 2 years and, to me, he looks the same just a bit older and more manly. Chris just kept saying over and over, "I find myself staring at his face and wondering, who is this??"  We all (every single member of Chris' family - including the 3 kids born while Edward was gone) surprised him at the airport with his putter, Sophie, and a cooler full of Sobees.

For the next week we pretty much just enjoyed being together, going for runs in the mornings, a lot of golfing for the Archibald-born, making cute and comfy dresses for the women, taking walks with the kids, eating picnics outside and swimming at a near by friend of a friend of a friend's mansion. We made and ate lots of good food and enjoyed visiting with extended family and friends at Edward's homecoming talk on Sunday and then at a Hall of Baldness BBQ on Monday. A lot of our time during that week was spend prepping for our upcoming, totally awesome, adult-only, 3 day Southern Utah/Escalante Backpacking Trip! Details will follow.

Fine line

And I thought the rustling of plastic in the kitchen during quiet time was just Charlie putting the movies he wants to take for our car trip into ziplock bags for safe keeping. . .

Me: "did you eat your lollipops without asking? And eat them in the living room??"

Charlie: "no! I didn't eat them. I just licked them. I opened them and licked them then put them in this bag."

Me: "in the living room?"

Charlie: grins, nods and holds up a bag full of cars and opened, licked lollipops.

Sticky, hard candy or chewed up gum are my grossest dislikes!
