Family Reunion... I mean Camping Trip

My parents have said they'd like to have an official reunion every other year, and the years in between will be a camping trip for anyone who wants to come. This was an in between year and so my brother, Justin, put on Slack the week he was available for camping and no one wanted to miss out (we all have a bit of a F.O.M.O. problem - Fear Of Missing Out) everyone decided to come! I referred to it often as my family's reunion but My dad overheard once and clarified that this wasn't a reunion, its just a camping trip. I asked him what the difference was and he said a reunion would have more formal activities like taking pictures, maybe t-shirts and an activity packet!

We all chose different spots this year to camp on to get a feel of the Ridge better. Chris and I were up on the top of the Ridge.  We didn't see a whole lot of wildlife until the last day but we did catch a glimpse of a moose! It got pretty cold at night and Max woke up a lot. The second day we got out a space heater and slept much better.  Charlie and Alec had their own tent or slept in cousin tents and Gwen sometimes slept with some girl cousins so we had quite a bit of extra space in our big tent. It was nice.

The cousins were all great to play with Max and watch him, especially Mia.

Our one 'planned' activity was a night walk organized by Grandpa.  He had this short devotional about following and being 'lights' for others as we set good examples of living like Christ. Alec had helped him set out a bunch of solar powered lights around the property and we walked from light to light and eventually ended back up at the firepit with the big fire going. Grandpa led a short discussion by asking grandkids questions about how that experience related to the gospel and our lives. It was short, sweet but deep and meaningful.

We also had one day we went to Jordanelle Resevoir.  It was pretty hot but we set up a few pavilions to get some good shade.  The water levels were SUPER high so there wasn't too much 'beach' to play on and the spit of land with a sidewalk that curves out into the lake for a bit was completely underwater by a foot or so. The cousins liked to walk along the sidewalk still to the very end (it got waist deep on an adult at one point) and back again. They called that the Jeffery Challenge.  A lot of the adults tried it too and it was a fun thing. I didn't finish it myself, the water was TOO cold and I didn't want to freeze my little baby inside. :)

Heres a good picture of Gwen kayaking over the sidewalk.

Tiffany - being so close to her due date - didn't sleep every night up at the Ridge just incase she went into labor at night, she didn't want to be driving down the bumpy and windy mountainous road.  I took this last picture of the toilet/shower area because I think my dad is a genius.  Its quite wonderful for an outdoor shower and port-a-potty. Its almost luxurious with the cedar wood smell, not-cheap shampoo/conditioner, hot water, sanitizer wipes, moisturizing sanitizer, extra toilet paper rolls, and a foaming soap to spray on toilet paper to get the effect of a wet wipe.

Moving to Utah

Packing up the house took FOREVER and we had lots of help from friends, the YW, neighbors and family. Grandma and Grandpa Archibald flew out 2 days early to help us pack, load and drive the truck. We needed to make it all fit on one truck so we had to leave some stuff behind to throw away or donate. Our good friend, Amy drove a couple of loads to Goodwill for us. My bible study friends surprised me and showed up on our last day to help pack up stuff. We didn't finish on the day we had hoped to, but got really close. It happened to be during the 3 days a year that flies were out like CRAZY (something to do with the farmland next to our property) and got in the house with the doors open to load the truck. Like hundreds of flies.  Mrs. Betty surprised us with breakfast the next day and stayed to help with the final boxes.  We made a last minute decision to hire our church friend, Patricia Vernon to do a deep clean after we left since we didn't have enough time to clean it like we wanted.  We finally finished loading the last of the stuff that fit around lunch time and we had to change where we planned to stop for the night because we didn't have enough driving hours left. Grandpa and Grandma Archibald left as soon as the truck was packed so they could get on the road first (knowing they would travel slower)

I drove the van (also packed to the brim from the middle seat back...) with Gwen, Alec, Freddy and Max.  We left around 2 because Max was WAY PAST ready for a nap and was just getting completely in the way as we tidied up and threw away the final things (leaving the house in show-ready state as it was still on the market)  Chris and Charlie stayed longer to finish the last touch ups like sanding the putty we had put on all the empty nail holes, and then they painted over the putty! They also drenched themselves in sweat as they pulled the many bags of garbage to the top of the driveway and finished all the final clean up. Its just mind boggling how long this process took.

I was loath to get too far ahead of Chris on the drive because I wanted to caravan together. So I tried to take up some time by getting one final lunch in at a favorite Starkville restaurant, the Little Dooey. Such. Good. Barbeque. Max lasted pretty well, because most of his tantrum like behavior was induced from hunger!

Chris got off around 4:00 and we couldn't use our walkie-talkies to communicate because we had more than 5 miles between our cars! (I didn't think about that when we bought them for this drive). Grandma and Grandpa arrived at the hotel first and reserved two rooms. The kids and I got in just after 8 and Chris pulled in around 30 minutes after us. Sweet Chris made up the time with super short stops and only fast food.  It felt so good to be all together finally and on the road.  We got out earlyish around 8 for another long day... but driving the cars was WAY better than the bustle and stress of packing up the house. I actually think the hours on the road listening to a book on tape while the kids watched movies (I was soooo ok with them putting movie after movie in) were quite enjoyable. I loved radioing in to Chris (who drove just behind me with two kids) whenever I felt like it.

And then Gwen screamed in the front seat.

Actually first she said, "Alec, stop" and then she turned around and screamed. She screamed and shimmied out of her seatbelt in the front seat without unbuckling it and was in the middle seat all in the time it took for me to say, "WHAT?"  Trying not to crash as I'm driving down the freeway, I tried to understand what happened. She told me she felt something tickle her back and when she looked she saw a long dark tail.  She thinks it was a lizard. Luckily there was an exit just in time and I pulled off as I radioed Chris telling him Gwen saw a lizard. We hang out at the side of the road of the off ramp and open the doors and look for it. The cars packed and a mess and we can't find anything, it could be anywhere (if there was really a lizard at all). Chris helps us look but after 20 minutes we decide to just keep driving but I make Alec sit in the front seat. (Gwen refuses). We drive not more than 20 feet before Alec screams "I saw it!" and I pull to the side of the road of the on ramp. Chris helps us look again and we see it in the bottom pocket of the passenger side door. I'm picturing a little green lizard that we saw on our back deck all the time... but its a massive SKINK... a blue, slimy-looking half-lizard/ half snake thing with a thick long tail and body and neck.   I am sooo relieved its in the door so we can open it wide and with Chris standing between the door and the rest of the inside of the car we block its ability to get back into the car and lost amongst all the cracks and crevices there.  No one wants to touch it and after 5 minutes of drying to scare it to jump out on its own, I tell the kids I'll pay someone 20 dollars to pick it up. Charlie bravely says he'll do it, but keeps jumping back when the skink moves. Chris eventually gets it to hop out of the pocket by using a Triscuit box and Charlie kind of helps with magazine. It slithers away into the dry Kansas grass and I kinda feel bad knowing it'll probably die in such a dry climate.  But also I'm just a little creeped out.... It had been in the car with us for more than 24 hours!?!?! If it had crawled across my legs while I was driving, I'm pretty sure we wouldn't have ever made it to Utah alive.

Grandma and Grandpa accidentally made a wrong turn and somehow added 2 hours to their route to catch back up with us.  Chris and I found this out around dinner time and we decided to just stay where we were for the night and get to the hotel early so Grandma and Grandpa don't have to drive super late into the night to catch up.  That was such a blessing to the kids. They've had to deal with stressed out parents for SO many weeks and the drive and skink incident were taking its toll, we were all a little anxious. We found a hotel and all went swimming after dinner and before bedtime.

That night, I woke up in the middle of the night because the room was shaking and rattling. Everyone else was still asleep but I woke Chris up and said I think its an earthquake.... mostly because I thought he'd tell me I was wrong and that everything was fine. The room and everything in it continued to shake for a few more seconds as we both just sat up and looked around and then it stopped. Everything was quite and nothing was wrong so we went back to sleep... which wasn't that hard since we were both SO exhausted. Moving 7 months pregnant is not EASY.  We looked up on the internet the next morning and got confirmation. A 4.something earthquake was recorded just a little ways away!

We left early and weren't sure if we'd make it all the way home or if we'd have to stop for a 3rd night since we hadn't been able to travel as far as we'd like the previous two days. But we did! We drove constantly and pulled in after 9:00pm on the third day.  Whew! We made it. Chris and I and James drove the whole way. I sorta thought Dixie would be able to spell me off with driving but they never actually traveled with us... and always ended up being behind or ahead of us, we only saw them at the hotels at night and in the morning. I was worried I wouldn't be able to handle driving that much, being pregnant with gestational diabetes, not really able to snack on food to keep me awake. I munched on ice chips and snacked on veggies, nuts and cheese occasionally but mostly it was the book on tape keeping me awake.

Fathers day, last hurrahs in Starkville

Father's day breakfast-in-bed

We got in one more time at Lake Tiak-o-Khata with Audra!

Burning up the big tree that fell a year ago, randomly, in the middle of a quiet Saturday. (It had rotted from the inside out... a typical Hackberry)

A RARE quiet moment of summer when all the kids were reading.

A sweet couple that moved into our little branch just a month earlier needed someone to watch their 2 year old daughter for a few days (she didn't have a passport so couldn't go with her parents to her grandpa's unexpected funeral in Mexico). Kinda crazy how we were the best option despite having the house on the market, and moving in 2 weeks, with 5 kids, a 6 month pregnant mom recently diagnosed with gestational diabetes... but we were really the best option...! She did great and Gwen was a big help. She only cried for a little bit at nights when we put her to bed earlier than she was used to. (I NEED MY KID-FREE EVENINGS)  While she was here we caught our last turtle!

Our announcement on social media about our move to Utah also included a little plug for someone to buy our beloved house. We REALLY want it sold so we can find a place to live in Utah and get settled before school starts and the baby comes. We've had some showings... maybe like 1-2 a week on average.  We are really going to miss this beauty.

We had some last playdates and dinner dates with dear friends like the Pages ... and of course we couldn't forget to celebrate Shuniqua's birthday and make her favorite Perfectly Chocolate Chocolate Cake with chocolate whipped cream frosting.

We had a little going away dinner party with my ladies from the branch.  I got to pick so I chose my favorite Thai place. Massaman Curry.... yum.  These women have been my family... mom, sisters, aunts to me. I love them each so so much and am so sad to leave them. I just want to cry looking at this picture. Sharon, Janelle, Peggy, Emily, Donna, Amy, Jennifer and Audra. 💗💗💗

Food trucks, and Spring MS creatures.

We're trying to get rid of things before we move (kitchen table, grill, couch, treadmill, purple desk, kitchen carts, etc...) and throwing away a lot of things. One thing that won't make the move but that needs to be documented is this awesome paper food truck Charlie made in school.

Also, one morning this week Charlie told me he wanted to make cakes and sell them to earn money. So he made this cake all by himself and frosted it by himself too. He came up with the idea all on his own (it was one of those classic Charlie moments when I'm busy doing something and he comes up all excited about something and asks permission and I am slightly distracted and grunt some sound (or maybe even remained totally quiet) and he takes my response (or lack of response) as a "definitely, YES!" answer and then goes and does whatever it is he wanted to.  Anyway he made this cake and then got too scared to ask anyone to buy it. So I bought it from him and served it at my Preschool BBQ End Of Year party.

Also, Chris was out of town for something and one of my preschool kid's mom mentioned how she always felt bad about not bringing me a meal when Max was born over a year ago, that she wanted to bring me one now. It was perfectly timed and it was AMAZING southern goodness. Smoked Chicken legs, corn salad, green beans and baked beans.

 Random pictures to remember:

We have lots of lizards out right now. Sometimes they get in the house and Chris rescues us.

Freddy is our creature lover and he likes to catch the lizards and frogs. All of the kids got into it one day and kept trying to put the frog on Max's head.

They succeeded.

Also, the turtles are out! We found one crossing our driveway as we went for one of our walks one morning. Despite all that I feel like I need to get done around the house to get ready to move, I need to make sure I get in exercise since it acts as a form of insulin and helps with my gestational diabetes.
